Rick Garcia Gets HUD Appointment

Does Coken switch races?

This is will obviously cause a bunch of candidates to start moving around right?  Will any of the HD4 or HD5 candidates jump into the city council race?

I just Googled Rick Garcia and all the HD4 and HD5 candidates name to see if there has been anything said about the dominoes.  So far, it looks like Dan Pabon is the only one who has said publicly that he is definitely committed to his current race (HD4).  

Does Jennifer Coken switch to the council race?  Pabon is way ahead of Coken in the ground game (from what I've seen and heard) and fundraising.  Maybe she is looking for a different race go after?

What about the HD5 candidates?  Which candidates live in Garcia's district?

Only 1 precinct from HD5 is Council District 1

and none of the HD5 candidates live in that precinct.

Of the people currently on the canvas, Frangas, Sandoval, Coken and Pabon are the only ones who live in CCD1.

If Frangas were to go for CC instead of SD34, that would leave SD34 between Lucia Guzman and Joel Judd. I think Lucia would win that one. Frangas is her principal conpetition. But I am not convinced Jerry could beat Paula Sandoval for City Council, so that may be more of a gamble for him.

Jennifer Coken was county party Chair while I was party Secretary. She did not strike me as someone who would fit right with city council. Statewide issues are more her arena. And I think if she were going to persue the SD seat she would gone that way to start with.

One possibility that I had not mentioned

Since the city is in such financial straits, Garcia may wait to resign for a few months (or City Council may not declare a vacancy for a few months) so that the special election would fall on Primary Election Day.

This would allow Paula Sandoval, Jerry Frangas, and Joel Judd to finish the session so any vacancy for those seats would just be filled to serve the remainder of the term (until Jan 2011) and the people nominated and elected to follow that process as normal and take their seat in Jan.

The person picked by vacancy may or may not be the same person elected in Nov.

There may be issues with Garcia hanging on to the seat

He cannot miss too many council meetings (not sure of the number) before the seat becomes defacto vacant.  And while Council might want to avoid a special election, leaving northwest Denver without a council member for 3+ months would be problematic.  It is not just the votes that council members need to cast, but the constituent work is 90% of the job.

I am not sure about Denver's election laws (you clearly are the expert there) but is it not possible for the election commission to do an all mail ballot for the special election?  There is still a cost to this, but certainly a cheaper one than a full-blown regular election.

Paula Sandoval for Mayor---DUH

I think that Paula would make a wonderful Mayor she has the Leadership, Experience and and people skills and thats what Denver needs. Her time in the State Senate and many years of public service says she is the Candidate to beat in the Mayor's race is she so chooses to run.

Georgia Sigala announces City Council District 1 candidacy

Georgia Sigala is a fourth generation native of Northwest Denver.
